How to Apply to a Magnet School

There are two Magnet application periods. The regular Magnet application period begins each year October 1st and ends January 15th for all Magnet programs in Miami-Dade County. Magnet results are released each year on March 15th. Once the regular cycle is completed, the Off-Cycle Magnet application period offers remaining available seats in selected schools.
The Off-Cycle Magnet application period opened on April 15th and will remain open through the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. Parents/legal guardians can apply to the Magnet Off-Cycle program of their choice. Students must apply and meet all eligibility criteria to be admitted. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Accepting an Off-Cycle Magnet seat will not affect your wait-list status at another school. After applying, the Magnet school will contact you. Assistance from the School Choice & Parental Options office is available by calling 305-995-1922.

What Makes Magnet Schools Great?

What are Magnet Programs?

Elementary and Secondary School Programs offering specialized courses of study that satisfy student educational interest and mandated learning goals while promoting diversity.

The School Choice & Parental Options office of Miami-Dade County Public Schools facilitates a wide variety of Magnet programs that provide unique and enhanced educational opportunities that appeal to students with diverse backgrounds, special talents, and similar interests. These programs offer specialized courses of study that satisfy student educational interest and mandated learning goals while promoting diversity. Some programs accept all interested students; other programs have specific entrance criteria. When the number of eligible students exceeds the number of available seats in non-audition-based or language-tested Magnet programs, a random selection procedure is utilized to admit students. These uniquely designed Magnet programs are categorized under one of the following five themes of study:

  • International Programs
  • Liberal Arts
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medical)
  • Virtual Options
  • Visual & Performing Arts
